Ursula Cafaro is currently a PhD student working on her comprehensive exams in the Human Studies and Interdisciplinarity program at Laurentian University in Sudbury under the supervision of Drs Lynne Gouliquer and Carmen Poulin. Her research focus is on the experiences of women returning to secondary education later in life. Also under Lynne & Carmen’s supervision, she received her Master’s degree in Sociology at Laurentian University. For her Master’s thesis, she investigated how downsizing complicated the lives of 90+ year-old adults. For both her MA and PhD, she is using the Psycho-Social Ethnography of the Commonplace (P-SEC) methodology.
Ursula finds participating in the P-SEC research group to be rewarding on many levels. The group is composed of members from different backgrounds and fields of study, which provides many opportunities to examine important issues from a variety of points of view. Moreover, the readings and on-going topics of discussion in the P-SEC group are always timely and relevant. She also benefits from an environment that supports critical and creative thinking and her development as a social scientist. As a member of the P-SEC research group Ursula is grateful for the many ways participation adds meaning, breadth and rigour to her studies.
