About

Jennifer McWilliams received her Bachelor of Science, with First Class Honours in Psychology, from the University of New Brunswick (UNB) in May 2016. For her Honours project, she worked with Dr. Ryan Hamilton on a study that investigated whether the embodiment of specific facial expressions (i.e., smiling, grimacing, or a neutral facial expression) influenced participants’ Ratings of Perceived Exertion (RPE), actual exertion (heart rate), and performance (kilometers traveled) during a 20-minute cycling task on a stationary bicycle.

Jennifer became a part of the P-SEC research team immediately after graduating. As part of the P-SEC research group, she has worked predominantly on the women in firefighting study, and has also provided assistance with numerous other studies/tasks. Jennifer presented and was a co-author on a recently published manuscript on the topic of othering of full-time and volunteer women firefighters in the Canadian Fire Services.

In the Fall of 2018, Jennifer continued her education at UNB in the MA/PhD Experimental Psychology program under the co-supervision of Carmen and Lynne. Her Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC)-funded Master’s Apprenticeship,  investigated the daily experiences of Canadian career women firefighters who are 40 years of age and older. For her PhD Apprenticeship, Jennifer is currently examining how the COVID-19 pandemic has influenced the lives of undergraduate students who have recently graduated from a university in the Atlantic provinces. Finally, for her SSHRC-funded PhD thesis, she will be examining the lived experiences of sibling caregivers of individuals with intellectual disabilities who reside in New Brunswick and Ontario.

Outside of P-SEC, Jennifer’s research interests lie in the areas of stereotyping, prejudice, discrimination, and decision-making, as well as health psychology.
