About

Sophia Konermann is currently a PhD student at the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, under the supervision of Drs. Carmen Poulin and Lynne Gouliquer. She met Dr. Poulin while she attended UNB during a year of studying abroad in Canada in 2019/2020. While taking Dr. Poulin’s psychology of women class, Sophia learned about P-SEC and its research and was invited to join the research group in May 2020. Sophia feels that joining P-SEC allowed her to gain insight into qualitative research from a feminist perspective, focused on marginalised groups with the explicit goal of altering institutional policies to reduce inequalities and oppression. After completing her B.Sc. in psychology (honours) at the Otto-Friedrich-Universität Bamberg, Germany, she returned to Canada to do graduate studies in 2021.

Sophia continues to carry out P-SEC research throughout her graduate education. During her first year as an MA/PhD student, she completed her first research apprenticeship taking part in Carmen and Lynne’s pan-Canadian study on the experiences of currently serving 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals of the Canadian Armed Forces. She focussed on the trans experience, in particular. She has since worked on projects regarding policies concerned with trans individuals in the Canadian Armed Forces. She is currently undertaking her second research apprenticeship focussing on the experiences of women officials. She is also preparing for her dissertation project, concerned with marginalised communities in rock climbing. She wishes to further her knowledge about interdisciplinary research, the reality of women, and people living in the margins, with the hope of bringing about positive social change.

In addition to her qualitative research, Sophia completed her comprehensive project on the association of heartrate variability and breathing exercises among university athletes under the supervision of Dr. Ryan Hamilton.

Alongside her studies, Sophia is actively engaged in bringing about positive changes to the sport of rock-climbing in New Brunswick. She lends her skills and volunteers to develop inclusive policies for the climbing organisation Ascent New Brunswick and provides coaching to young climbing athletes in an indoor environment.
